Quail farming (raising quails) is a profitable livestock activity with strong growth potential, since the market is very large, especially for eggs. For example, if in your first year you have 100 quails, 75 of which are females with an 80% laying rate, you'll end up with nearly 60 eggs a day, or 1,800 eggs a month. If you sell each egg at just 100 CFA francs, that's 180,000 CFA francs a month. However, some producers we met in Cameroon told us they sell an egg for 250 francs and still can't keep up with demand.

Since the quail is a highly prolific animal, it's not difficult to build up a flock of 1,000 quails by the end of the second year.

The advantages of quail farming:

  • Quails grow very quickly.
  • They mature early, reaching laying age quickly - laying starts from the 7th week under optimal conditions.
  • They have a laying rate of 90%, meaning that on a farm of 500 laying quails, you get 450 eggs a day.
  • They rarely fall ill.
  • They need very little space - for example, on a 1 square meter area you can raise 60 to 70 quails, and cages can be stacked up to 4 high, or even 5 under certain conditions.
  • Low investment required.

What you need to know about quail farming:

You shouldn't get into quail farming without knowing the answers to the following questions:

  • What factors influence egg-laying?
  • How many eggs can a quail lay?
  • What's the right ratio of females to males?
  • Do quail chicks need to be kept warm?
  • At what age can quails be slaughtered for consumption?
  • What weight should eggs be for consumption?
