Some Cameroonians in the diaspora tend to move back home for good to develop their projects, like Loic KAMWA, while others launch their businesses while staying abroad, as is the case for young entrepreneur Bertrand Foffe, founder of Jangolo Farm.
Born in 1983 in Douala, Cameroon, Bertrand FOFFE is a young Cameroonian living in the Netherlands and founder of the Jangolo Farm platform. A 2012 ICT graduate of Fontys University of Applied Sciences, he now works as an IT consultant for giants like Philips and Accenture. Passionate about entrepreneurship and a lover of agriculture, discover the story of Jangolo Farm's founder.
Jangolo Farm: A search engine for agribusiness in Africa?
Jangolo is a young AgriTech (technology applied to agriculture) start-up founded in 2016 and headquartered in Douala, Cameroon. As reflected in its mission, "Eat local, Eat healthy", it puts health and the local economy at the center of everything it does.
Jangolo Farm's vision
Aware that agriculture is the leading employer in Cameroon and in many other African countries, Jangolo Farm was created with the aim of improving the living conditions of farmers, agricultural producers, and consumers by making it easier for them to access the market and the information they need.
The difficulties Jangolo faces
One of the main difficulties faced by the Jangolo start-up is being able to reach farmers out in the field. There's also the poor quality of internet connectivity and these farmers' lack of familiarity with technology tools.
But to address some of these difficulties, the start-up chose to work with certain agricultural cooperatives already established on the ground, to better register small producers in their database, and also to raise more awareness on social media about the platform's value for all players in Africa's agricultural value chain.
Some platform statistics
Today, Jangolo has a little over 20,000 users and 40,000 small producers registered on the platform, with monthly growth of nearly 10% without any real marketing. Jangolo has a team of 7 in-house staff and 10 freelancers.
After more than four years in existence, the results achieved by Cameroonian entrepreneur Bertrand FOFFE are rather encouraging. Few entrepreneurs living in the diaspora manage to pull off launching a viable project to prepare for their return home. Jangolo's growth in the world of agribusiness hints at the ambitions of Bertrand, who now stands as a successful entrepreneur to be reckoned with going forward.
